Muyiwa Owoniyi

Consultant ophthalmologist

My clinical interests are in managing all general ophthalmic conditions, with a particular interest in the medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma, complex cataract surgery, and high volume cataract surgery.

I qualified as a doctor from the University of Birmingham and, following my initial junior doctor training, returned there to teach anatomy. My registrar training was in the Wales deanery, during which I took some time out to work as an education fellow at the Imperial College NHS Trust and Western Eye Hospital in London.

On completion of my registrar training, I completed the prestigious glaucoma surgical training fellowship programme at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, before working as a consultant in my current post.

As well as my role at Newmedica, I’m also the lead consultant for glaucoma at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, where I teach and supervise students and practitioners. This includes the medical and surgical supervision of other ophthalmic surgeons, training glaucoma practitioners, and lecturing at the University of Keele.
